Facts and investigation

Attacker: 0xCFd0A20703cD11E0b9f665e1C3F1Ef989C142D54 (Ethereum) — different attacker from May 18, 2026 first exploit

Funds moved to: Drained basket: ~1,137 ETH + 71.5 tBTC + USDC + USDT + EURC + MKR + scrvUSD | Exploit tx: 0xa1f1e65c1cea4dba4ae439cd4dcdba6cc2dbda0ed1228e61f29ae9c9324eb099 | All assets consolidated into ~3,916 ETH via DEX routes on Ethereum → routed through Tornado Cash. No recovery or freeze reported.
Vulnerable bridge contract: 0x71518580f36feceffe0721f06ba4703218cd7f63 (Ethereum) | Attack vector: submitImports import path — attacker triggered unbacked Ethereum-side payouts using a 0.01 VRSC transaction, exploiting missing value-validation check (Ethereum side released reserves without confirming matching value committed on Verus chain). IDENTICAL bug class, contract, and entry path as May 18, 2026 first exploit ($11.58M). Prior incident: May 18 attacker returned 4,052.4 ETH (25% bounty ke

Timeline: On May 18, 2026, the Verus Ethereum Bridge suffered its first exploit ($11.58M) via the submitImports import path. The attacker accepted a 25% white-hat bounty and returned 4,052.4 ETH. On July 8, 2026, Verus redeposited the recovered ETH into the same bridge contract — without patching the underlying flaw. On July 23, 2026 at approximately 03:45 UTC, a second (different) attacker exploited the identical vulnerability: submitting a fraudulent import claim via the same submitImports path triggered the Ethereum-side contract to release bridge reserves without verifying matching value on the Verus chain. The attacker drained approximately $7.54M in a mixed basket of ETH, tBTC, USDC, USDT, EURC, MKR and scrvUSD. All assets were consolidated into ~3,916 ETH via on-chain DEX swaps and routed through Tornado Cash. Blockaid and CertiK issued alerts within minutes of the exploit. As of July 25, no official post-mortem had been published by VerusCoin, no bridge pause announcement was issued, and no recovery was reported.
