Ledger

Attacker

MISSING — the operator and the intrusion method were not disclosed (Microsoft only confirmed unauthorized access). Manual recovery: Microsoft/X statements and the archived posts of @clippymsftcto (suspended); Wayback Machine.

Funds moved to

MISSING — no loss was quantified by Microsoft or a security firm. Promoters of the token claimed a liquidity pool of more than $200,000 (not verified). A $3M-drained claim published on Oct 3 by a single AI-assisted site has no address or hash and contains factual errors: it is not used. The top-100 traders of the candidate pair show about $850,000 of cumulative realized profit, which is not the victims' loss and is not dated to Oct 1.

Linked

Candidate token (the link to the hijacked account is NOT confirmed; no article names the token's address): CLIPPY 0x85856F025BF13b8Fd2aaE2F6DA458318744F1E18 on Robinhood Chain (chain ID 4663), a Doppler ERC-20 created about Jul 18, 2026 by the wallet labelled 'Clippy: Deployer' 0x29ccc8f5dcbe0823fa48ccff0aba3f3766215c9a (still holds 18,095,026 CLIPPY, 1.81% of supply, on Oct 4). Its Uniswap v4 CLIPPY/MSFT pool id is 0xb3e164e6cce432f23a0d553f37091216963010de78c5d3ca80d1d56aadab3e25 and the paired tokenized Microsoft stock is 0xe93237C50D904957Cf27E7B1133b510C669c2e74; liquidity about $138K-$181K and market cap about $258K-$265K on Oct 4. The deployer is the token's creator, not an identified attacker. Supply is concentrated (Uniswap Pool Manager 33.54%, top 25 holders about 67%) and 81 of the top 100 traders have addresses starting with 0x4, with about 71 of them never having bought: a coordinated-wallet pattern, unproven. Many look-alike CLIPPY tokens exist on Solana, BNB Chain, Base and Robinhood Chain.

Chronology

1 beat
  1. On Thursday Oct 1, 2026 the official Microsoft X account (about 13M followers) was taken over for roughly 30 minutes. The attacker changed the profile picture, reposted content from the @clippymsftcto account (since suspended) and posted a message promising to 'bring Clippy back' at 500,000 likes, followed by an unauthorized apology post; the posts promoted a crypto token. Microsoft confirmed unauthorized access, said it had secured the account and denied any involvement in a token; the intrusion method was not disclosed. Coverage by Microsoft's spokesperson, SecurityWeek, BleepingComputer, PCMag, WindowsLatest and Crypto Briefing followed on Oct 1-2. Promoters claimed that the token's pools were backed by real Microsoft shares and valued them above $200,000. The most plausible candidate, a CLIPPY/MSFT pool on Robinhood Chain, existed since mid-July, which would mean the hijack relaunched an existing token; this link remains unproven (no article gives the promoted token's address and the Oct 1 price spike was not verified). No financial loss has been quantified.
